On , João Lourenço passed his Yondan (4th Dan) examination in kendo—and the whole dojo is celebrating with him.
Behind that result are years of disciplined keiko, patient correction, and commitment to the art. It is a proud step for João and a memorable one for Hekisuikan.
Who we are
Hekisuikan is the next chapter of Doha Kendo Club—built on the same floor, the same friendships, and more than a decade of kendo in Qatar.
Our members come from Qatar and around the world to practise the Japanese martial art of the sword. We sharpen technique, test our character, and look after every person who shares the floor.

How we got here
What began as a place for a small group to train has grown into an international dojo. Along the way, public demonstrations at Aspire and events with the Embassy of Japan have helped more people in Qatar meet kendo for the first time.
Abdulrahman Rashid Al-Mohannadi founded Doha Kendo Club, giving local and international kendoka a place to train together in Qatar.
The club demonstrated kendo at Aspire during Qatar National Sport Day—the start of a public-outreach tradition that continued the following year.

Dojo teaching 01
In Kendo, the greatest opponent is always yourself. Training through the summer heat teaches us endurance, but true strength also means knowing our limits. Progress never rises in a straight line. It comes step by step, through patience, discipline, and consistency. Do not rush. Do not chase results. Just keep moving forward, one step at a time. To overcome yesterday’s self—that is the true spirit of kokki.

You do not need experience to begin. Send us a message, arrive ready to learn, and we will guide you from there. Hekisuikan practises inside Lycée Voltaire in Doha.
Tell us you are interested and ask whatever you need to know before your first visit.
We will explain what to wear, how equipment works, and what to expect when you enter the dojo.
Start with clear fundamentals, train at your level, and build from one session to the next.
